About People's Republic of China

The People's Republic of China is a nation in East Asia and the most populous country in the world, with over 1.4 billion inhabitants. Its vast territory encompasses grasslands, deserts, mountains, lakes, rivers, and over 14,000 kilometers of coastline. Chinese civilization is one of the oldest in the world, with its most impressive achievement being the famous Great Wall, built in the northern part of the country, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The capital, Beijing, is a mix of modern architecture and historic sites, such as the monumental complex of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Shanghai is a global financial center known for its skyscrapers, while Hong Kong and Macau are partially autonomous regions.

China is a military regime with power exercised by the Communist Party. Officially, it is a one-party parliamentary socialist republic with "market-oriented" reforms, facilitated by the opening-up policies initiated by the United States, which led to China's accession to the WTO in November 2001. China is also a prominent member of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), comprising the major emerging economies.

Territorial disputes still create strong tensions with neighboring countries and Western nations, particularly regarding the situation of Taiwan. China claims sovereignty over the island, while Taiwan asserts its own sovereignty over mainland China. This complex condition emerged after the end of the Chinese Civil War.
