The United States of America is a federal republic of North America consisting of fifty states and a federal district. The forty-eight contiguous states and the district of Washington D.C. (the federal capital) occupy the central belt of North America between Canada and Mexico and are bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

With 9830000 km² in total and about 331 million inhabitants, the United States is the third largest country in the world by area and the third by population. Major cities include New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, while geographically the country offers a wide diversity of natural environments ranging from large national parks such as Yellowstone, The Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains.

It is one of the most multi-ethnic and multicultural nations in the world, a large-scale product of immigration from many countries, which has always played a crucial role in the development of the Union. In fact, in addition to an increase in the population of African origin, there have been waves of migration from European and Latin American countries in the most recent past, so much so that the second most widespread language after English is Spanish.
